Engines

A unified system for the designation of engines was introduced on 1 February 1928. The system consists of

  1. a code identifying the type of engine (refer table 1);
  2. a number (refer table 1);
  3. a code identifying the manufacturer (refer table 2);
  4. further coding to identify the version.

 

F          turbo‑fan engine: numbered from 100 onwards for USAF engines, 400 onwards for USN engines and 700 onwards for US Army engines;
H          piston‑engine/double opposed: numbered with the piston displacement in inches;
I           piston‑engine/inverted vertical: numbered with the piston displacement in inches;
J          turbo‑jet engine: initially numbered from 30 onwards with odd numbers for USAF engines and even numbers for USN engines. Since late sixties numbered from 100 onwards for USAF engines, 400 onwards for USN engines and 700 onwards for US Army engines;
L          piston‑engine/in‑line: numbered with the piston displacement in inches;
LR        liquid fuel rocket engine: numbered from 1 onwards with odd numbers for USAF engines and even numbers for  USN engines;
O         piston‑engine/opposed: numbered with the piston displacement in inches;
PJ        pulse‑jet engine: numbered from 30 onwards with odd numbers for USAF engines and even numbers for USN engines;
